Must read. My RJ. I agree with the others that money is definitely not enough. Let us not mention about other countries, let’s focus on Singapore.
The standard of living in Singapore is very high. The transportation fees, entertainment, school fees, laptop, extra classes, bills and money saved for rainy days are money that we spend on almost everyday.
Transportation fees; let me ask you a question. How much do you have to spend if you take bus and MRT to school? I am very sure it is more then three dollars. If you own a car, that is even worse. You have to pay for the monthly instalments and repairing. You also need to pay the road tax and other “unnecessary” things. Looking at this situation in the perspective of a student, I really hate the way the transportation fees are made. We students, have to pay the adult fair. This is really not fair to us. I was actually apathetic towards this, but when I started to work and paid for myself for the transportation fees, I felt like this is the particular thing that I spent most on. All my money for clothes turned out to be my transportation fees. The government should spare a thought for the students who are not working and the low income families. These fees really cost a bomb!
Entertainment; who in this world do not need entertainment? We students have a lot of stress, so we definitely have to relax ourselves. But take a look at the movie tickets! The price is forever increasing, and we would have to think twice before going to the movies. When we start thinking again, we add stress to ourselves. So is going to the movies a stress- free activity?
When I go shopping, I would have to walk around the shopping centre for a few times before deciding whether to buy a particular dress. I am like a madwoman, went around the centre to find the same design, yet at a cheaper price to please myself. I am a person that cannot stand wearing the same clothes. So every week I have to buy new ones. There is a low possibility that I change my attitude towards dressing up. So what does this mean? This means that I have to spend a lot!
School fees; although they are not paid by me, but I feel kind of “sorry for my parents”. They strive and work hard outside, take the money that they earn to pay for a pathetic school fee. I feel so bad to make them pay for me.
Laptop; It is a norm in RP to buy a laptop. It cost over a thousand, and if it is spoilt, we have to repair it and it cost us a lot too.
Extra classes; I am actually attending Japanese and Korean classes outside school. But the school fees are too expensive so I dropped out. Can you understand my situation that I cannot pursue my interest with money? Money is definitely needed here!
Bills; this happens every month. Phone bills would come and we would get the shock of our lives. We tend to use our phone frequently and so, it adds up to the amount we have to pay.
Everyone needs this- Money for rainy days. In case of an emergency, you would need it. I don’t know whether the amount have to large, but a small amount is better than nothing.
Can you imagine the amount you have to pay as a student that is working part- time? I have actually calculated the money that I would have left after spending.
The amount that I earn is $X. The amount I have to spend is $Y. So do the subtraction and alas!
I am left with $2! Well, I can save it in my piggy bank! It adds up to a lot of money if I save it well. But who knows that I wouldn’t take money out from there frequently?
If money is enough in Singapore, then
1. Jack Neo would not made a movie called “Money not enough.”
2. Nobody would commit suicide due to financial problems.
3. Psychotherapists in Singapore would be out of job.
4. Everybody would be complacent.
5. No debates and RJ question on “Money not enough for Singaporeans.
